Washing your hair correctly is the foundation of good aftercare. Follow the agreed detangling guidance before washing to remove any minor tangles. Use products recommended for the selected extension and attachment system, as harsh detergents can strip the hair of essential moisture and degrade the keratin bonds or tapes. When washing, gently massage the shampoo into the scalp without vigorously scrubbing the mid-lengths and ends. Apply conditioner only from the mid-lengths down, avoiding the attachment points as directed for the selected system, as conditioners and oils can cause bonds to slip or tapes to loosen.

Brushing should become a careful daily ritual. Use a specialized extension brush with soft bristles that glide over the bonds without catching. Support the hair near the root while brushing to help reduce unnecessary tension and brush gently from the ends, gradually working your way up. Avoid brushing extensions while very wet unless the salon has shown you an appropriate detangling method, as hair is most fragile in this state. Instead, gently detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb if absolutely necessary.

Sleeping with wet extensions may increase matting and tangling. Allow them to dry before sleep where possible and follow the nighttime guidance for the selected package and attachment system; results vary.

Heat styling is permissible but requires caution. Use a suitable heat-protection product according to its instructions before using blow dryers, curling wands, or straighteners. Keep heated tools away from the attachment points, as direct heat can melt keratin bonds or compromise the adhesive on tapes.
